This year, the Lopi-Hinter-kin Christmas was a two part affair! Andy and Molly celebrated on the day in Connecticut with Molly's family and then got snowed in due to the blizzard. Then the LopiHinter-group traveled from Rochester to Boston to celebrate again and we were able to celebrate New Year's Eve there as well! Is was a fun time!
Molly made wonderful beef wellington for Faux-eve dinner, with her sister joining us! We proceeded to eat our way through the rest of our visit with monkey bread, quiche, waffles, hors 'd ouerves and plenty to drink! Here are some pictures! I am hoping to get a couple copies from Andy to post of the matching Sofia made jammies and the fam by the tree! Great time!

Mom's Blog

I haven’t done any updates since just before mom’s ordeal with her health. At the time I last blogged, I think we had a feeling that mom’s health was tenuous, but naturally, had no idea what we were in for. I took some pictures on her birthday that turned out to be the last great shots taken of her. In the very very back of my mind I think I knew that this might be the last ones taken for a while, but you just never know for sure. So here are a couple really great shots, one is a repeat; I also wanted to include a copy of what I wrote and read at her service on Sunday, July 12, 2009. Along with Andy’s really terrific tributes on his site I hope that this provides some comfort, closure, and some introspection for some of you.

I also want to thank all of you for your comforting words, even when it is hard to know what to say, your warm hugs and your thoughts and prayers. I will be drawing on those in the coming weeks and months. Gratefully, Becky
Here’s my copy:
When we left the hospital on Monday night, my eyes panned the bumper stickers of cars in the parking garage as we trudged up the ramp for what would be the last time. I had become too familiar with that walk and frequently read the stickers or checked out license plates as I went. Sometimes I would see the same cars and think, “Oh someone else is here going through a loved one’s illness too, or maybe that is a car belonging to some one who works here.” The bumper sticker that caught my eye that evening was a very simple one: white with black lower case letters which read: “hope won.”
It was an obvious reference to the political beliefs of the driver as other stickers indicated. My first was response was to think, how wrong, hope didn’t win today. It is a terrible day. But almost immediately, I began thinking that hope had to have won somehow. Hope can’t lose.
Earlier in her illness, Mom and Dad and Andy and I had conversations about hope. “What hope do we have of recovery?” and “I hope she is improving”…and the like. During one conversation Dad had with Mom weeks ago about her wishes and what decisions should be made for that day, mom wrote on her white board, HOPE in capital letters. Dad took a picture of that message and sent it to us. That picture held such meaning for all of us. We had hope that everything would be ok, mom was going to hope and so should we. I know I looked at that image with hope in my heart and a lump in my throat.
So even though some people may think that hope was lost on Monday or that we’d given up hope, or that there is no hope, my very being is screaming that hope can’t be LOST. There has to be hope. I have been thinking about that sticker and wondering how I could prove that hope did in fact win and what I came up with was this: Mom and Dad had a hope that she’d recover from her cancer years ago, which she did and we have a wonderful family and friends of all kinds to prove it. Mom lived a good life doing things she liked to do, volunteering where she could, reaching out to lonely people or those that might not quite fit in, loving her family, trying new and creative things, entertaining, laughing and loving all of us, all of you. Yesterday so many people expressed to us what we have been hearing since March, how they loved mom and wanted the best for her. I also heard how she touched their lives in some way. I appreciate all the kind words and sentiments, but what has really stuck in my mind are the stories that we have recalled, the stories others have told of the way she lived her life and the grace and spirit of her actions.
These stories, these memories, these lessons she taught us are how hope is going to win every time.
So hope has won, it lives on in all of you, those she touched, those who were lucky enough to call her friend, sister, cousin, mother-in-law, grandmother, wife and mother. I hope you all will hang onto one little thing she said or did that gave you hope and made you smile, even if for a moment and pass that on when you see someone else who needs encouragement, or a hand to squeeze or a hug or just someone to listen. In that way hope will always win and that will go on and on…

Finalllllyyy!

Hi all! Happy holidays, happy 2009, Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day, happy Inauguration day, Happy Ground Hog's Day, Happy Valentine's day! I think that about covers it! It has been awhile since I have posted last and I won't bore you with details and things I can't remember anyway, but I will post pictures from the past 3 months! The Lopez-Hinterman clan had a lovely holiday season! We had a white Christmas, a Blizzard that was precisely timed the day before and after the arrival of Abuelo for the holidays. Sofia was so excited to have her Abuelo here for Christmas. It was the first time he experienced snow and freezing temperatures. Needless to say the novelty and excitement of that wore off quickly! But we had a memorable holiday with the whole family and time together! Spiderman Jammies are definately a new and interesting tradition, Uncle Andy! The past few weeks have been busy with work, pre-school excitement, being the "Leader of the Day" is HUGE for a four year old! Unbelievably, Kindergarten Registration is on the Horizon! This past Tuesday we celebrated my mom's Bday with her favorite Cherry Pie and dinner out! German and I have been making strides to become more healthy in 09 and change is slow, but more optimistic and positive this go 'round! Andy's running progress is really inspiring! Please keep in touch, loved ones, and let me know about your moments in life as well. The small moments and celebrations are really important...

Ski Lift Ride!

Ok, so I am REALLY late in putting together this one, but I wanted to write about something Sof and I did with my parents in mid-October, back when the weather was the opposite of what it is today. It was unseasonably warm then, while we have wind chills in the teens now! Anyway, my mom read in the paper that the local ski resort, Bristol, (by local I mean the one most skiers here go to, but is really about an hour's drive away) was opening their lift for fall foliage viewing and rides to the top of one of their runs. This is something I have always wanted to do. I remember missing out on a similar adventure in the Adirondacks when I was about 10 or 11 and just thought it sounded cool! SO luckily my mom asked if we wanted to go and I said YES! We had a beautiful day and a gorgeous drive into the finger lakes area with a clear blue sky and nice views from the hilltops. When we arrived we realized that most of the Democrat & Chronicle subscribers had also read the article decided to give the lift a go. SO we got into line and waited for maybe 30 minutes and took a ride up the mountain! It was great! I took a ton of pictures and loved it! When we got to the top, conventional wisdom told us to get back into line for the ride down, since they were loading only every 3 seats and the line was again long! mom went into line and Sof and I explored a bit, wandering a little ways down a path. She and Grandpa did the same as I waited with mom. the ride down was worth the wait at both ends! We could see a long way and the trees on the mountains were perfect. We grabbed a hot dog at the bottom and drove on back along the 5 & 20,which is a winding route through a village or two! It was really a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon!
Late Fall!

More fall Fun!

Just this week, we have gone to another pumpkin farm, this one is much closer than the one we went to last month, right up the street practically! On Columbus Day Sof and I met some Margy School friends there and loved walking around the dark pumpkin hollow where we could see tons of artistically carved pumpkins. Then we went on a hayride to pick a pumpkin and finished up with a donut and cider in the big barn. On Friday we got to do it all over again on a pre-school field trip! I was a volunteer! It was so much fun, Sof talked about it for ages before it happened and then loved showing her teacher around the Pumpkin Hollow and the creek. We picked out more pumpkins and had more cider and donuts and played in the bin of corn kernels. Have you ever made a corn angel? Sof and her buddy did! That night we went to the crazy Canal View party at my school and handed out treats to students! Fall is a good time!
Early Fall

We have had some beautiful fall weather around here! Early in the season, Sof and I met our buddies, Becca, Katie-pop, and Ethan-ator for a fun filled day at Brown's Berry Patch! It was a warm day and the girls rode the pony, went down the big slide, got face/body painted and bounced on the huge pillow! Sof's turn on the pillow was a short one, but Ethan and Kate loved it! Ethan also loved the water troughs, as you can see. Sof was happy to play with the water pump as well. We picked apples and took pictures with the pumpkins. A great time was had! We wrapped the day with a sleepover and Sunday morning pancakes!
